You can now control how marketing consent is collected from clients in regulated regions, and your clients can manage their notification preferences directly from their service view.
This update gives you a clearer way to stay compliant with regional privacy laws like GDPR, LGPD, and POPIA, while giving clients more control over the emails they receive from you.
What this feature does
This feature introduces three connected pieces:
- A new coach setting in service creation that lets you require marketing opt-in for clients in regulated regions.
- A consent capture step at the point of enrollment, shown only to clients in regulated regions.
- A new Notifications tab inside the client service view where clients can manage their essential and marketing email preferences per service.
Together, these give you compliant consent collection at sign-up and ongoing preference control after enrollment.
Why this matters
Many regions require explicit marketing consent before a business can send promotional emails. Without explicit opt-in, you may be sending marketing communications that do not meet local compliance standards.
This update ensures:
- Clients in regulated regions are asked clearly before being added to your marketing list.
- Clients in non-regulated regions continue to be subscribed automatically.
- Clients can update their preferences at any time without contacting you.
Regulated regions covered
The following regions are treated as regulated:
- European Union (all 27 countries)
- EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway)
- United Kingdom
- Switzerland
- Turkey
- Brazil (LGPD)
- South Africa (POPIA)
- Canada
- Australia
- New Zealand
Clients in any other country are automatically subscribed to marketing communications and will not see the marketing checkbox at enrollment.
Setting up marketing opt-in for your service
Step 1: Open Step 2 of service creation
Go to the service you want to configure and open Step 2.
At the bottom of Step 2, you will see a new checkbox: Require marketing opt-in (regulated regions).
A tooltip next to the label explains which regions are considered regulated.
Step 2: Decide whether to require opt-in
You have two options:
Leave the checkbox unchecked (default)
- Clients in regulated regions will still see a marketing opt-in checkbox at enrollment, but it is optional.
- Clients can join the service whether or not they check it.
- Clients in non-regulated regions are subscribed automatically and do not see the checkbox.
Check the box to require opt-in
- Clients in regulated regions must opt in before they can join.
- The Join, Enroll, or Reserve button stays disabled until they do.
Clients in non-regulated regions are subscribed automatically and do not see the checkbox.
What clients see at enrollment
Clients in regulated regions will see a marketing opt-in checkbox at the point of enrollment. Whether this checkbox is required depends on your Step 2 setting.
If a client in a regulated region declines marketing, they are still added to your contact list, but their marketing status will be marked as Unsubscribed.
Clients in non-regulated regions do not see the checkbox and are subscribed automatically.
The new Notifications tab for clients
After a client joins a service, they will see a new Notifications tab inside their service view.
The tab contains two toggles.
Essential Notifications
Covers session reminders, community tagging, and other important updates for the service.
- Clients can turn this off at any time.
- Turning it off here also disables it in the client's account-level Notifications settings for this specific service, and vice versa.
- This setting is service-specific. Turning it off for one service does not affect another service.
Marketing Messages
Covers promotional updates and news from you.
- The default state reflects the client's opt-in choice at enrollment.
- Clients can toggle this on or off at any time.
- This setting is global per coach. Changing it on one service updates it across all your services for that client.
Confirmation step
When a client toggles a setting off, they will be asked to confirm before the change is saved. This helps prevent accidental opt-outs, especially for essential notifications.
Link to platform-wide notification settings
A link inside the Notifications tab takes clients to their Account Settings, where they can manage notifications across the platform. Mobile notifications are managed separately inside the Cohere mobile app.
How essential and marketing consent behave differently
It is important to understand the distinction:
Essential Notifications are service-specific. A client can turn off essential notifications for one service without affecting their preferences for another service you offer.
Marketing Messages are global per coach. The most recent marketing preference a client sets applies across all of your services. For example:
- A client opts out during Service 1. They are marked as Never subscribed for all your services.
- That same client later joins Service 2 and opts in. Their status updates to Subscribed across all your services.
- A client opts in during Service 1. They are marked as Subscribed.
- They later join Service 2 and opt out. Their status updates to Unsubscribed across all your services.
The most recent action always wins.
What gets recorded in your contact list
Every client who joins your service is added to your contact list, regardless of their marketing choice. The difference is in their marketing status:
- Subscribed. The client opted in to marketing.
- Unsubscribed. The client was previously subscribed and later opted out.
- Never subscribed. The client declined marketing at enrollment or in the Notifications tab without ever opting in.
This lets you keep accurate records while staying compliant.
Quick FAQ
Do I need to turn on the new Step 2 setting? Only if you want to require marketing opt-in for clients in regulated regions. If you leave it off, the checkbox still appears for those clients but is optional.
What happens to clients in non-regulated regions? They are automatically subscribed to marketing communications and do not see the marketing checkbox at enrollment.
Can a client turn off essential notifications? Yes, but they will be asked to confirm before the change is saved.
If a client opts out of marketing for one service, does it apply to all my services? Yes. Marketing consent is global per coach. The latest action a client takes updates their status across all your services.
If a client turns off essential notifications for one service, does it apply to all my services? No. Essential notifications are tracked per service.
